Language Requirements
As a part of your plan to get a degree or a career overseas, you would have to sit for an approved English language test. International students who don’t have English as their native language are required to show that their English language abilities are of an acceptable standard. IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is the most common test that measures your language skills for education, employment, or immigrating to Canada. IELTS is globally-recognized and is accepted by over 400 universities and colleges in Canada.
Ztudents helps students significantly boost their chance at getting the right IELTS score for academic or work ambitions. Our experienced coaches help you gain test awareness, develop proven strategies and test-related skills, and practice in a make-believe test environment. Which IELTS Test Is Right For You?
IELTS tests are available in two different categories - IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Confused about which test to take? Well, your reason for moving abroad will determine which test is right for you.
Usually, a general training test is sufficient for immigration purposes. Alternatively, the university, college, or academic institution will require you to clear the academic test with a certain score. In either situation, the organization where you intend to work or study in Canada will tell you the IELTS requirements, or you may find out that IELTS is not even a compulsion for you.
At Ztudents, we welcome all IELTS test-takers of all proficiency levels to prepare with our experienced instructors. As Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCIC), we will also help you in selecting the right test pattern. Connect with us for a counselling session today.
Planning to Study in Canada? IELTS Academic Is the Way to Go
English is the main language of instruction for a majority of courses in Canadian universities and colleges. Being proficient in English not only improves your chances of getting admission into your dream institution but will also help you in visa requirements and many other aspects of living abroad. IELTS Academic judges if your language proficiency is enough to lead you to academic success.
Take the IELTS Academic test if you want to:
-
Pursue an undergraduate level or postgraduate level degree in Canada.
-
Apply for a student visa to study in an English country.
-
Seek employment in an organization located in an English-speaking country.
IELTS Academic is composed of four tests - Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Since each test holds equal value, getting the desired IELTS score will require performing well in all four sections.
Language Requirements When Applying Under SDS (Student Direct Stream)
SDS, or Student Direct Stream, is a special visa processing provision available for students from certain countries, including India. If you apply for a visa under the SDS category, you can expect a simpler and faster visa processing than the non-SDS category. Once you have successfully applied, your study permit will be issued to you in 20 days or less. However, in addition to your nationality, there are some conditions that you need to fulfill to ensure eligibility for applying under SDS.
As an SDS-category applicant, you also need to take a language proficiency test and achieve a minimum score of 6 bands in all four sections. This is a non-negotiable in this category.
All About CELPIP - An Alternative to IELTS
Your English test score is crucial for both the admission and visa processes. The higher your score is, the better are the chances of getting favorable outcomes. And the good news is that IELTS isn’t the only choice available. CELPIP, or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program, is quickly becoming a preferable test format, especially for students who have previously stayed in Canada for a significant period.
Lower test fee, shorter test duration (all sections are completed in just a day), and faster scores - there are a number of advantages for choosing CELPIP over IELTS.
However, the choice isn’t as simple as it looks. The difference in their test format can affect your score and, thus, your choice. A good rule of thumb is to take sample tests for both to understand which test format you are most comfortable with. Can You Study in Canada Without IELTS?
Not many universities and courses give you the option to study in Canada without IELTS. However, some common ways that allow you to gain admission and entry into Canada with an IELTS score, given that one of the following is applicable:
-
You have taken other acceptable English proficiency tests like TOEFL.
-
You are from an English-speaking country.
-
You have studied for a minimum of 4 years in an English-medium school.
-
You have enrolled in a language school for a semester or for a year as may be necessary.
While applicants enjoy fast visa processing times under SDS, the IELTS examination is a must. If you wish to skip IELTS, your visa application will fall into the non-SDS category and take the standard processing time.
If you plan to apply for permanent residency, the minimum IELTS score when applying via Canada Express Entry is CLB 7. This means that you should be able to score at least 6.0 for each of the four sections. The CELPIP language proficiency test is also accepted in the Express Entry program.
